The 'Karuselli' swivel lounge chair w/ ottoman by Yrjö Kukkapuro (b. 1933), originally designed in 1964, feature strong fiberglass shells, soft black leather upholstery and chromed steel swivel mechanisms that rotate and tilt to achieve the most comfortable sitting --- designed with ergonomics in mind, perfectly womblike in order to cradle the human body. The Finnish furniture designer Kukkapuro was a central figure of Scandinavian functionalism. “Does it make any sense to design a chair which is not good to sit on?” was one of Kukkapuro’s favourite sayings. His famed designs aimed at a subtle balance between utility and aesthetics – fine examples of this is indeed the Karuselli chair. During his career, Kukkapuro was been awarded many national and international prizes – including the 1st Prize at the International Chair Design Competition in Italy in 1972 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1995. His works are present in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York and Vitra Design Museum in Germany's Weil am Rhein, and many, many others worldwide.
